Hiking Boots, Hiking Shoes

If you are a serious hiker, you understand the importance of having the right hiking shoes. A wrong step resulting in a twisted ankle can quickly ruin your day. Sun & Ski has a great selection of hiking boots and shoes designed to tackle roughest terrain with ease. Get the grip and stability you need to feel comfortable on even the rockiest ground. Sun & Ski carries all your favorite hiking boot brands from The North Face, Merrell, Columbia and Keen

What kind of hiking boot should I get: low, mid, or full-height?
Low-cut trail shoes are lighter, more agile, and great for day hikes and light terrain. Mid‑height boots provide ankle support and protection, ideal for multi-day hikes or uneven trails. Full‑height boots offer maximum ankle support, which is best if carrying heavy packs or tackling rugged, rocky terrain.
How should hiking boots fit?
Fit should be snug at the heel, secure through the midfoot, and allow about a thumb-width of space in the toe box—especially for downhill hikes. Try them on in the evening when your feet are swollen a bit, and wear your actual hiking socks.
Waterproof or breathable? Which is better?
Waterproof boots (like those with Gore‑Tex) keep feet dry in rain, snow, or wet terrain—but can trap moisture if conditions are warm. Breathable boots are ideal for hot, dry climates to reduce sweating and hotspots.
How do I break in new hiking boots?
Even if they feel good out of the box, break them in gradually: start with short walks indoors, then build up to day hikes. Leather boots may take longer—plan for a few weeks or 20–30 miles to break in.
What materials are best? Leather vs. synthetic?
Full-grain leather is extremely durable and weather-resistant, but heavier and slower to break in. Synthetic and fabric boots are lighter, more breathable, and break in quicker—great for fast hikes or warmer weather.
How do I choose the right sole and traction?
Lug depth matters: shallower, closer treads are best for hard surfaces; deeper, widely spaced lugs are ideal for mud and rough terrain. Many Sun & Ski boots feature Vibram or similar high-traction outsoles suited for varied conditions.
How can I maintain boots to last longer?
Regularly clean off dirt, treat leather, and reapply waterproofing. And store them dry and ventilated. Sun & Ski also offers maintenance products to care for your boots.
